Natural Capital of the Elephant Hill Wildlife Area
This report was prepared for the Secwepemcúl’ecw Restoration and Stewardship Society to evaluate the natural capital impact of the 2017 Elephant Hill fire in economic terms. The Elephant Hill fire charred almost 192,000 hectares of Secwepemcúl’ecw, the traditional territory of the Secwépemc people. We estimated the economic value of impacts to several ecosystem services, including: culture and community wellbeing, biodiversity, food and fiber, water capture and supply, flood and landslide risk, air quality, and carbon storage. These equated to annual losses of $512M to $993M in ecosystem service benefits, and a one-time loss of natural capital of $1.651B to $1.721B.
